Have a vehicle but no title? You may still be able to obtain legal ownership through a Nevada Bonded Title.
A bonded title is a special type of vehicle title issued by the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) when a person cannot provide sufficient proof of ownership but can demonstrate a legitimate interest in the vehicle. Nevada created this process to help individuals resolve ownership issues without having to go through court in many situations.
What Is a Bonded Title?
A bonded title is a Nevada Certificate of Title that is backed by a surety bond. The bond serves as financial protection for anyone who may later prove they have a valid ownership interest in the vehicle. If a legitimate ownership claim arises, the bond provides a way for the injured party to seek compensation.
The bond does not protect you. The bond protects anyone who may have a valid claim to the vehicle.
When Might You Need a Bonded Title?
A bonded title may be an option if:
You purchased a vehicle and never received the title.
The title was lost before it was transferred into your name.
You only received a bill of sale.
The previous owner cannot be located.
The ownership history is incomplete or unclear.
You have possession of the vehicle but cannot obtain the documents needed for a standard title transfer.
A bonded title is generally not required if the title was previously issued in your name and was simply lost. In those cases, a duplicate title may be available instead.
What They Are and How They Work
How Does the Nevada Bonded Title Process Work?
Step 1: Submit Your Application
The process begins by submitting documentation to the Nevada DMV Title Research Section in Carson City. The DMV reviews any ownership documents you have available and conducts research on the vehicle.
Step 2: DMV Determines the Bond Amount
The DMV performs a theft and brand history search and calculates the required bond amount. Nevada bases the bond amount on 150% of the vehicle's original Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).
Step 3: Purchase the Bond
Once approved, you purchase the required surety bond from a licensed bonding company. The cost of the bond is only a small percentage of the bond amount and varies based on several factors.
Step 4: Receive Your Bonded Title
After the bond and required documents are submitted, the DMV may issue a Nevada Bonded Title showing that a bond is attached to the ownership.
How Long Does the Bond Stay in Effect?
Nevada requires the bond to remain in force for three years, even if the vehicle is sold during that time. After the three-year period passes without any ownership disputes, the bond requirement can be removed, and a standard title may be requested.
